Appearances for Recruitment!

Just a fore-warning.... all this info is going to seem superficial but it is just how recruitment goes.   We know many of you might have some issues and concerns regarding the superficial side of recruitment.  As recruitment chairs, we totally understand where you are coming from.  We believe that your personalities and conversation skills are going to be what gets us the best pledge class this summer! Unfortunately, during recruitment, these are traits that are very difficult to truly find in others during snappy 10 minute conversations or less!  So when we say that we want you looking your best for recruitment, it isn’t that we don’t think you aren’t already wonderful and incredible women, it’s that we know recruitment possibly better than anyone and we know that a first impression is absolutely crucial and therefore it isn’t that we want you being superficial, it is that we don’t want anything to detract or distract from your vibrant and glowing personalities.

           

Prior To Recruitment Week

• You are all expected to have your nails and toes, manicured and pedicured
• Your hair needs to be freshly cut and colored (if that applies to you) - please NO grow out!!
• On that note, no crazy hair streaks (Purple, Green, Blue etc) lets be natural, classy, and poised.
• If there are feathers in your hair, take them out.
• Be beautiful and tan
• PLEASE DO NOT BE YELLOW/ORANGE - we want to have a stunning glow to our skin
• If you do not feel comfortable tanning in a tanning bed, then make sure to get your fair share of Vitamin D from the natural sunlight or get a self tanner such as Jergens Natural Glow

Recruitment Week Expectations

• Shower every day
• Hair done every day:
• "Hair done" means straightening or curling hair
• Make-up on 
• Please go for the "natural" look, no need for clubbing makeup, just a nice summery look
• Clothing unworn & new
• No tags, laid out/ironed so there aren't wrinkles
• Shoes unworn & new 
• Please make sure there are no scuffs & they are CLEAN
• Brush your teeth, legs shaved, remember deodorant, unscented lotion
• NO PERFUME - (Pan rule)
• Lip gloss/chap stick
• The summer days can get hot, so make sure you know your own body and your amount of sweating you do
• Good antiperspirant is Certain Dri
• Cutting up panty liners and putting them on the insides of your shirt in the armpit works well too :)

Accessories

• Hair accessories such as bows, headbands, and flowers are encouraged, just make sure you can rock it and it goes with your style.
• We would love it if everyone have a silver ring on their right hand middle finger signifying our ritual and sisterhood, but it's not required
• Necklaces, bracelets and earrings are encouraged as well, just make sure they are tying in with your outfits well and aren't too over the top

Some clarification:

     When we say that your nails and toes have to manicured and pedicured we aren’t saying they have to be acrylics whose color matches a different outfit every day,  they don’t even have to have a color on them! We just want them trimmed and looking nice when you shake another woman’s hand or talk vivaciously using our hands (and in some of our cases our wintered and Ugg quarantined feet could use a pedi or two…).

     When we say that we want your hair nicely cut and colored, we just want to make sure that when a PNM looks at you they aren’t looking at your roots.  You don’t need a bottle of hair spray, just a laid back summer look!  We can’t all wield a curling iron like a wizard!

     When we say that you should have a fresh glow we do NOT expect you to go tanning in a bed or subject yourself to harmful rays.  We just want you to have a healthy glow whether it's from laying by the pool, going tanning, spray tanning, using a self tanner or what have you!  Make sure if you're going to be getting a spray tan or using self tanner, you're covering all your bases and getting a thorough color!  We don't want any streaks or splotches!

     When you look good, you feel good, and when you feel good, you are more confident and do better.  We just want you all to rock it!  We have to say all the superficial things that everyone knows we really do not want to say…but because we are responsible for you…we have to say the hard stuff that no one else really wants to bring up.  

     We have been through Recruitment 3 times ourselves and we know that appearances are vitally important, in both directions!! If a PNM comes to a party without showering or having her hair done, that docks her score almost every time, it really is hard to get to know someone in depth in less than 10 minutes, so physical attributes are mostly what we have to go off of for the first few days at least.

     Here is the thing, we want your PERSONALITIES and your true selves to shine during recruitment.  At the end of the day, it is the CONVERSATIONS and connections that you make with another girl that will make her want to pledge.  The rest is just making sure that nothing else takes away from that.  We are not asking you to be completely done up, prom night, dining with the president, we are just asking you to be put together so that you can put your best self out there to get the best girls (the ones like US, duh!!) So we apologize if some things sound superficial, we know that every year they will.  But when we welcome 800 women into our homes, we want to look put together and polished so that we appeal to a wide audience and then dazzle them with our shining personalities!!

     We appreciate and respect all of you A LOTand we do not want anyone to be put off by the comments we have shared with you.  If you have any questions or concerns first please know that we are not trying to quell your wonderful quirkiness but rather create a look that allows your personalities and conversations to shine brighter, and secondly know that you can always come to either of us.  We all have a little weirdo in us, but for one week we need to just need to figure out how to engineer that weirdness constructively for the continuation and betterment that is AOII.
